What is BIM?
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the holistic process for creating and managing information for a building. Based on an intelligent model enabled by a cloud platform, BIM integrates structured, multidisciplinary data to create a digital representation of an object throughout its entire lifecycle—from planning and design to construction and operation.
What is BIM used for?
BIM is used to create and manage data throughout the design, construction, and operation processes. BIM integrates multidisciplinary data to create detailed digital representations, managed in an open cloud platform, enabling real-time collaboration. BIM provides greater insight, better decisions, more sustainable options, and cost savings for AEC projects.
How does the BIM process work?
The BIM process creates intelligent data that can be applied throughout the life cycle of a building or infrastructure project.
Plan
Incorporate critical information into project planning by combining reality capture and real-world data to create contextual models of existing built and undeveloped areas.
Draft
This phase involves conceptual design, analysis, detail development, and documentation. Construction preparation begins with planning the scheduling and logistics using BIM data.
Construction
During this phase, production begins with BIM specifications. Construction logistics are shared with contractors and subcontractors to ensure optimal timing and maximum efficiency.
Operation
BIM data is used for the operation and maintenance of the finished buildings. It can also be used later for cost-effective renovations or efficient demolition.
Why is BIM important?
According to United Nations estimates, the world population will grow to 9.7 billion by 2050. The global construction industry must therefore employ smarter and more efficient design and construction methods to meet global demand. The resulting spaces must be both intelligently usable and future-proof.
BIM not only enables design and construction teams to work more efficiently, but also capture the necessary data for subsequent operations and maintenance during the initial process. For these reasons, BIM is increasingly being mandated for projects worldwide.
How do teams work together on BIM?
BIM is revolutionizing project management across all disciplines, making project execution smarter and more efficient. Teams, data, and workflows are connected in the cloud at every project phase to improve project outcomes.
What is BIM interoperability?
BIM interoperability is the ability for AEC project teams to collaborate and communicate seamlessly across disciplines and industries, regardless of preferred software tools and vendors. Autodesk supports an open and interoperable AEC software environment defined by seamless data connectivity.
