CAL = Client Access License
RDS = Remote Desktop Services (used to be known as Terminal Services)

CALs are required by licensing for all users or devices that access Windows Server Essentials, Windows Server Standard or Windows Server Datacenter. When a customer buys Windows Server, they receive a server license that allows them to install the operating system on one computer. A server software license by itself doesn’t provide the license rights to allow anyone to connect to that computer, whether they work for the company or not. Instead, each user or device needs a CAL.

A standard CAL allows a user or device to connect to a Windows Server. In order for a user or device to use Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Services) an RDS CAL is necessary. We don’t sell any of the cheaper standard CALs here at Recycled Software – all our CAL products are RDS CALs.

Be careful to choose between a user RDS CAL and a device RDS CAL.
